Play and Learn Groups
Play and Learn Groups are provided for parents, Family, Friend and Neighbor caregivers, and children in various neighborhoods across Denver with a focus on school readiness. The target population is low income families of children birth to age 3 who are not enrolled in formal early childhood education programs.
Play and Learn is a school-year based program that meets twice per week for two hours. A trained early childhood educator facilitates several developmentally appropriate activities, hosts a snack time, and models high quality teacher/child interactions for families and caregivers. Adult-child play sessions address topics focused on child development, health and safety, community services, and other areas of interest to participants. Play and Learn programming focuses on the protective factors in the Strengthening Families framework: parental resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete support in times of need, and children’s social/emotional competence. In addition to reducing social isolation, the groups introduce parents/caregivers to the benefits of high quality preschool programs and how to identify and access these programs.
